There is a desire that God has for us as Believers, and one we should have for each other. It is found in Colossians 4, and it involves a man named Epaphras. Epaphras was a believer, a companion of Paul, and was from Colossae. He had a deep, caring love for the believers in his hometown. This love drove him to see their deepest and to pray for them.
In Col. 4:12, Paul gives us a description of how Epaphras prayed, and this description is a challenge for us to do the same.
Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.
Here are some key thoughts to think about how to pray for one another.
- Epaphras was an intercessor. He labored in prayer for others.
- Epaphras was always wrestling in prayer for the believers in Colossae.
This was not an occasional thing he did but a constant burden he carried. It was an intense time of prayer, strenuous and costly. The word wrestling is the Greek for struggling or laboring, and it is where we get our word agony. It suggests intense, athletic-like effort and spiritual battle. It was not a casual petition. The term clearly shows us the difficulty of effective intercessory prayer.
- The goal of his prayer was very specific. He wanted the Believers in Colosse to:
· Stand firm in all the will of God. The only way to be successful in living for Christ is to know and live God’s will.
· Be mature. This is important to be able to grasp and apply spiritual truths.
· Fully assured. Fully convinced so one will press on till the end. If we are not fully assured, we can stray off course.
What an incredible example we have before us of how we should stand in the gap for others and pray.
In Christ,
Pastor Doug
